About the Study Group

BACKGROUND
The Theological Study Group East is an informal fellowship of clergy and laity of the Northern Illinois Conference of The United Methodist Church.  This group began meeting in the 1940s and has met continuously to discuss books and issues of theological and cultural significance.  New participants are always welcome.

FORMAT
A book is selected for each meeting to be read by the group before the meeting.  The meeting begins with devotions.  A volunteer presenter prepares a paper (3,000-4,000 words or 6-8 pages) and distributes copies of the paper to the group.  The paper usually gives an overview of the book with personal reflections from a theological and pastoral point of view.  After the presentation, the group is free to engage the presenter and one another with questions and observations.  There is a break for lunch at Noon (bring your own lunch).  After the lunch break, the discussion continues.
